Nutritional Medicine

Naturopathy is a potent healing art practiced for millennia by ancient cultures, historically important healers including Hippocrates, Claudius Galen, and Paracelsus, and recently by progressive, qualified practitioners. Modern naturopathy continues to embrace the original concept of vitalism, treasuring the intrinsic healing power of nature and reasserts traditional wisdom in the light of contemporary research. Naturopathic philosophy derives partially from Hippocratic teachings expressed over 2000 years ago. Practitioners improve wellbeing by supporting the body's innate capacity to recover from illness and injury using; holistic modalities, selected bioindividualised treatments and, acceptance of the unique journey of each adventurous soul.

Focussing on substantiated principles of health, naturopathy educates, empowers and motivates clients, enhancing informed choice, personal responsibility, elimination of degenerative lifestyle practices and uptake of beneficial activities. Naturopathic practice comprises a range of modalities harmonising environmental, nutritional, structural, psychological and spiritual domains. Naturopathy has endured with proven successes, resolving both chronic and acute conditions whilst avoiding destructive or invasive treatment practices.

Briefly, the six guiding principles of naturopathic therapy include:

  • Primum Non Nocere – Above all do no harm
  • Vis Medicatrix Naturae - The human body is an autonomic self-healing organism. The practitioner encourages and supports the process with safe, natural, nutrients and non-invasive therapies.
  • Tolle Causam - Explore and treat the underlying causative factors, the symptoms being merely expressions of the body's natural healing efforts. Recovery requires removal of the agents of disease.
  • Tolle Totum - Multiple factors in health and disease are considered while treating the whole person, satisfying individual health care needs.
  • Docere - The physician is a teacher, inspiring a healthy cooperative relationship.
  • Prevention is the best cure - Assessing risk factors and genetic predispositions, appropriate intervention minimises threats and reduces illness.

Herbal Medicine

Our western herbal medicine incorporates a relatively traditional philosophy of treatment, focusing on the overall person, not the disease. Physiological imbalances are treated patiently, over time, from the perspective of addressing causative agents rather than just amelioration of symptoms.

Through the spirit of herbs vital body systems are supported and hormonal activity normalised. Herbal medicines are primarily whole extracts of plant material rather than potent isolated constituents as is the potentially hazardous scenario in the orthodox medical pharmacopeia. The Galenic quality of western herbal medicines ensures additional constituents in the plant moderate actions of the stronger isolates such as alkaloids and glycosides. Unwanted side effects within the body are thus avoided while not detracting from the herbs efficacy. Most herbal medicines are taken in the form of liquid concentrated extracts and so are quickly absorbed by the body to augment health, restore wellbeing and prolong vitality.

Thousands of years of observation have validated the gentle actions of herbs. Taken appropriately in juice or water they nourish, warm, cool, reduce pain, detoxify, stimulate, sedate, tonify etc. The human being can be considered a minute holographic component of larger climatic activity, and just as weather patterns act to heat, cool, moisten, dry, nourish and calm our planet, the virtues of herbs do likewise to our organ systems and glands restoring a healthy balance.

Herbal techniques are extremely well established in fertility management, preconception, pregnancy, and post natal care and our gifted herbalists can assist professionally at every stage of the child creating journey.

PMS is the most common female hormonal imbalance, affecting up to 75% of women at some time in their lives. Medical texts define PMS as a group of physical and psychological symptoms that occur in the second half of a woman’s menstrual cycle, between ovulation and the onset of menstruation.

Many women accept premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and other menstrual irregularities as a normal part of life. In reality, menstruation should not cause any significant interruption to everyday living and symptoms of PMS or painful periods are a clear sign that your reproductive system is not working as well as it could be.

Psychological symptoms of PMS

  • Mood swings
  • Irritability, anxiety and nervous tension
  • Depression
  • Mental confusion, poor concentration and forgetfulness
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia

Physical symptoms of PMS

  • Abdominal bloating and distension
  • Weight gain from fluid retention
  • Breast tenderness and swelling
  • Headaches
  • Altered appetite – especially cravings for sugar, alcohol, fatty foods
  • Physical fatigue and weakness
  • Changes in libido
  • Constipation and/or diarrhoea

Why do we get PMS?

PMS occurs due to imbalances in female reproductive hormones. In particular:

  1. Low levels of progesterone throughout the cycle with elevated oestrogen during the second half of the cycle.
  2. It can also be related to too many “bad” oestrogens and not enough ”good” oestrogens. Oestrogen exists in different forms in the body, some of these forms are good for the body and are essential to female reproductivehealth; other forms are not and are associated with PMS and other menstrual irregularities.
  3. High levels of another hormone called prolactin may also be involved.

Various other factors can also play a part in influencing hormonal balance and causing PMS. These include stress, diet, weight issues and thyroid dysfunction.

Painful periods - Dysmenorrhoea

Dysmenorrhoea or painful periods are very common. Dysmenorrhoea literally means “difficult monthly flow.”

Symptoms of dysmenorrhoea include:

  • Moderate to severe abdominal cramping beginning at the start of the period and lasting 8–72 hours
  • Lower back and upper leg pain
  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea/vomiting

High oestrogen levels throughout the menstrual cycle, or too much of the “bad” oestrogens are thought to be a primary cause of dysmenorrhoea, by stimulating excessive production of compounds called prostaglandins, which cause inflammation, cramping and pain.

Irregular periods - Amenorrhoea

Amenorrhoea is the absence of a menstrual cycle during a woman’s reproductive years for reasons other than pregnancy and lactation. Oligomenorrhoea refers to infrequent or very scant menstruation. Amenorrhoea and oligomenorrhoea can transpire for a variety of reasons, including hormonal imbalances, low body weight, stress and/or over-exercising.

Heavy periods - Menorrhagia

Menorrhagia is the term for excessive and/or prolonged menstrual bleeding (longer than nine days). Most often, menorrhagia is associated with hormonal imbalances such as too much oestrogen, too little progesterone or excessive amounts of “bad” oestrogen.

Given that most women will menstruate for around 35 years, the value of a regular, symptom-free cycle should not be underestimated! Don’t be controlled by your hormones any longer – it’s time to turn things around so that you are in charge of them! There are a range of beautiful herbs and nutrients we can use to correct hormonal imbalances.

Kinesiology

In simple terms kinesiology is the art and science of energy balancing using muscle testing. Kinesiology can simplistically be regarded as a super sleuth technique that bypasses the distorting and sabotaging influences of our conscious mind. It is a powerful and scientifically validated biofeedback technique that when used effectively with a sound intellectual platform can indicate, prioritise, remedy or balance causative factors generating the symptoms of disease. Various muscles are readily used as indicators of stress, detecting imbalances within the body and reflecting the current state of organs and energy systems. Kinesiology may be used to identify, locate and diffuse destructive mental-emotional patterns, enabling a valid orthomolecular, homeopathic and/or phytotherapeutically based programme to achieve its full potential of health benefits for the client.

Our advanced kinesiology practitioners use an integrated system of natural health care combining muscle monitoring with principles of Chinese medicine to assess energy and body function, applying a range of gentle, yet powerful healing techniques to improve health, wellbeing and vitality. Our in depth protocols allow you to select individualised kinesiology options in order to address your health concerns at all levels of existence. These consequently enable those with health concerns to expediently, consciously and responsibly transform their life. Our collective experience has indicated quite clearly how kinesiology enhances and optimises the healing journey for all who select these advanced and specialised options.

Weight Management

Fat loss is, in reality, about body composition management. Commercial weight loss programs often focus on scales and tape measures without providing a clear understanding of the elements of our body composition, individualised nutrition and food choices, detoxification and organ support and hormonal function. That is why those commercial programs often end up in rebound weight gain, usually in excess of the original weight problem, as well as organ distress and long term diminishment of cellular health.

Our weight management programs focus on education and body composition measurements for self-responsibility and long-term health benefits while reducing cell age through anti-aging techniques. We promote long-term recovery and ongoing healthy lifestyle choices that will also assist the entire family. We aim to reclaim cell membrane integrity, cellular function and hormonal balance, minimise inflammation and reprogram the liver to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Nutritional awareness, exercise, efficient sleep techniques and stress reduction are all essential components to enhance metabolic activity, vitality and youthfulness and optimum detoxification is the vital key to long-term success and recovery of your optimal health.

Our healthy body clinic encompasses:

  • Weight Management
  • Sports Performance Optimisation
  • Body Building
  • Body proportioning
  • Holistic Pregnancy

Detoxification & Digestive Programs

Toxic exposure is a cause or driver of a vast range of health conditions, and detoxification has therefore become a cornerstone for successful management of many conditions.

Detoxification has 3 main clinical applications:

  • To reduce the confusing array of symptoms you present with.
  • To remove a potential blockage to successful treatment.
  • To support you with ongoing vitality and wellness.

The Detoxification Program is designed to rebalance disturbed intestinal bacteria, restore poor digestion, prevent allergic exposure, and repair the ‘leaky gut’. These factors can all contribute to the entry of toxins from the gut into the body, causing systemic inflammation. This dysfunction of the intestinal wall, and consequent toxic invasion, is associated with many chronic diseases. The Gut Repair Program addresses the causes of these health-destroying influences and can be summarised as a “weed, seed and feed” process.

  • Weed’ refers to the removal of adverse microbial pathogens - ‘bad bugs’.
  • Seed’ is the replacement of beneficial organisms - friendly bacteria’ - in the gut.
  • Feed’ refers to providing nutrients that sustain the growth of these beneficial bacteria, and help repair the ‘leaky gut.’ Toxins abound in our external and internal environment. Our bodies produce toxins from gut bacteria and other metabolic processes and we consume and absorb many toxins from our external environment.

It is amazing that the body finds time for other vital processes as well as contending with all these toxins.

Your health is largely determined by your ability to detoxify. Our aim is to help the body by stimulating healthy and gradual detoxification.

Optimal Health Programs

Health is not merely the absence of disease, it is a vibrant state of wellbeing and enjoyment of life.

Once you have achieved control of your health you should consider discussing an ongoing Wellness Program with your Practitioner. A Wellness Program will protect you from other diseases, while enhancing health and vitality. If you want to achieve a new state of wellbeing and maximise the quantity and quality of your life, you should discuss this with your Practitioner. Together you can develop a specialised, individualised Wellness Program just for you. This may involve appropriate dietary changes, an exercise regimen to suit your needs and/or supplements designed to provide you with key protective nutrients and herbs to maximize your health and wellbeing (e.g. multivitamin and minerals, antioxidants). These recommendations will assist you in achieving total wellness.

Management of Pain & Inflammation

Inflammation is the normal response of our immune system to all sorts of challenges, such as injury, infection, and toxicity.  But if it goes on too long, for instance because the body is tired and depleted of nutrients and is unable to heal properly, then inflammation produces chemicals which lead not only to pain, but also to tissue damage and disease.  If it hurts, you can be fairly sure inflammation is involved.  In many cases, however, you can have inflammation in your body without those familiar indicators – which is why inflammation has been called “the silent killer”.  A typical example of this type of inflammation is the underlying processes behind much heart disease and clogged arteries – often the first sign of this sort of inflammation is an unexpected heart attack!  Such ‘silent’ inflammation is also a fundamental contributor to conditions such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Fortunately there are a number of highly effective natural anti-inflammatory remedies that we can recommend.

Inflammation

We all know inflammation as the localised pain, redness, heat and swelling we get with injury; sprains and strains, cuts and grazes, insect bites and stings, and so on. But in fact the same process that produces those familiar symptoms also drives most diseases. Almost all pain is the result of inflammation – arthritis, and other joint, back and muscle problems; digestive disorders like irritable bowel disease or ulcerative colitis; and many types of headache – if it hurts, you can be fairly sure inflammation is involved.

Inflammation – the silent killer

In many cases, however, you can have inflammation in your body without those familiar indicators – which is why inflammation has been called “the silent killer”. A typical example of this type of infl ammation is the underlying process behind much heart disease and clogged arteries. 50% of all cardiovascular disease patients actually don’t have the traditionally recognised risk factors (high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc.). Very often the first sign of this sort of inflammation is an unexpected heart attack! Such ‘silent’ inflammation is also a fundamental contributor to conditions such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Controlling inflammation is extremely important

Inflammation is the normal response our immune system generates to all sorts of challenges, such as injury, infection, and toxicity. But if it goes on too long, for instance because the body is tired and depleted of nutrients and can’t heal properly, then infl ammation produces chemicals which lead not only to pain, but also to tissue damage and disease.  A startling confi rmation of how important the control of inflammation is in the treatment of disease, is the enormous numbers of anti-inflammatory drugs we use – from aspirin and paracetamol for mild conditions; to the more potent “non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs”; to the most powerful “steroidal” anti-inflammatory agents.

Pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories carry risk

Whilst they can be immensely effective in alleviating pain and inflammation, many, if notmost, of these drugs can produce undesirable side-effects. As little as 10 mg of aspirin may cause gut damage and bleeding. Recently an anti-inflammatory drug was recalled from the market after it became evident that it more than doubled the risk of heart attack. Steroidal anti-inflammatories, whilst sometimes life-saving (e.g. asthma), can inhibit immune responses and affect our capacity to cope with stress by suppressing our adrenal gland function.

Safe, effective natural anti-inflammatory options

Fortunately, natural medicine can provide some excellent anti-inflammatory options. Developed by Metagenics Inc., the ExpresSynTM Process is a new and innovative process that has made it possible to screen thousands of potential combinations of natural substances to assess their effectiveness and safety on human tissue. The ExpresSynTM Process has set a new standard of clinical certainty in natural alternatives. This exciting process has resulted in the development of a combination of extracts from Hops, Rosemary and Olive leaf, which has remarkable anti-inflammatory activity, and established safety for both the digestive and cardiovascular systems. This combination has proven extremely effective in helping to control pain, for instance in arthritis and period pain, and in more acute cases of painful muscles and joints from overexercise and tension. Modern formulations such as this can be very rapid in their action, often reducing symptoms within a few days. Studies have also shown it to reduce the “silent killer” type inflammation that underlies so many chronic diseases. It is important to appreciate that, as people are so complex, no single product can be expected to remedy every situation. This is as true of pharmaceutical medicine as it is of natural medicine. Fortunately, natural medicine provides many options.
